The Chennai International airport consists of old and new terminals. The old terminal is located at Meenambakkam and is now used for cargo services. The new passenger terminal complex is now used for passenger operations and is located at Tirusulam. Let’s go in detail:
The passenger terminal at the Chennai International airport consists of domestic and international terminals, which is connected by a link building. The link building consists of administrative offices and restaurant. The first passenger terminal was Kamraj terminal, named after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, K Kamraj. Later the second terminal ‘Anna’ (former Chief Minister C N Annadurai) was added to this structure in 1988.
At first, an international terminal with two aerobridges was constructed and later a domestic terminal with three aerobridges was built. With the completion of the domestic terminal, the old terminal of Meenambakkam began to be used for cargo. The international terminal was also extended adding a new block. Now, the new block is used for departures and the older for arrivals. You can find four entry gates to the airport. Each terminal consists of two each. Five and two x-ray baggage facilities are seen in domestic and international terminals respectively. Duty free shops, retail shops, restaurants, snack bars and executive lounges are seen in these terminals.
At present the development project aims to construct a new domestic terminal and expansion of international terminal. The new design has been conceived by New-Delhi based creative group. They are the principle architect designing passenger’s terminal building, parking garage structures and roadway access system. The new terminal is said to handle 10 million passengers and all together both the terminals will be having a combined capacity of 23 million passengers a year. The new terminal building will have 104 check-in- counters, 16 aerobridges and 60 immigration counters. There will be a flyover travelator, which connects the domestic and international terminals. It will be having an elevated road on the top and below there will be a tube, which will have two walkalators.
It is an exclusive terminal for Haj pilgrims and it operates during the period of Haj pilgrimage. It handles around 600 pilgrims at a time and consists of prayer rooms and hot water facilities.
